A couple of good things today.
First of all, I managed to score two great new (to me) lenses for my camera. I've had this super crappy 22-55/4-5.6 Canon lens since I bought my camera (d30) last year. It's a great zoom-range, but it's a POS lens. Anyhoo.. Back to the new (to me) ones. I'm a total whore for buying used gear, and I haven't been burned by anything yet (knock on wood). All my camera gear AND bass gear has been bought used. So, I was looking around the used section of a local camera store's website and found two gems. Canon primes are notoriously hard to find used, and I managed to find both a 28/2.8 AND a 50/1.8 mkI. The 28 is just a great lens.. pretty sharp, etc, but also a really useful focal length. And then there's the 50. I think every decent photographer on the planet with an slr has a 50mm lens. So, I had to get one sooner or later..
This is the mkI version of the lens though, which was quite a score as they're hard to find. The current lens available new in stores is the mkII which has a fully plastic body (including lens-mount), and also a really wonky focusing mechanism. The mkI has a metal lens-mount so it's a little sturdier, and it also has a normal focus mech. Woot! And icing on the cake, I got them both at a great price...
Also, I juuuust got home from see The Hives. Sahara Hot Nights opened, which I must admit I'm only vaguely familiar with, but they played a solid set. Nothing too mind-boggling, but just some great solid rawk. Plus they were all cute Swedish girls, which certainly doesn't hurt.
The Hives were amazing.. I've been a fan since "before they were rockstars" through some other bands I like on Burning Heart Records, and this was the first time I'd had an opportunity to see them. Amazing energy, that's for sure. They really seemed to be enjoying themselves as well, which is nice to see. Nothing worse than seeing a band perform when it seems like they're just going through the motions, and look like they can't wait to get off the stage. The crowd was super crazy too, which I'm sure helped them find some more energy for themselves. I find audiences here in Toronto are often 'too cool to go crazy' unless by 'go crazy' you mean 'beat each other up in a mosh pit'. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but it's nice to see people actually dance and jump around a bit as well for a change.
Anyhoo.. Time to go have a beer and feast on some more of the black bean + avocado (+ more) salsa I made this afternoon..
