So I'm really on the fence. I've never gotten a tattoo and I think I want one. BUT I can't really clarify more than that... part of me might want it just to have it...but that's stupid because its permanent and, I know its an excuse, but as an actor so far I've done a lot of shirtless/nude scenes. So, as an aspiring film star, model...adult entertainer?...I dunno if a tattoo would be the best idea.
The tattoo itself is something very original that my friend Brian is designing. Its a takeoff on an animated segment from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, more specifically, the song "The Origin of Love". Its not that the song or the show has had a HUGE impact on my life, but the story is pretty much my mentality on love.
As the tale goes, before civilization, religion, and world order, there were 3 human-like creatures. One looked like 2 men glued back to back, one like two women, and one (the children of the moon) like a man and a woman joined together. Four arms, four legs, four eyes, two hearts. "They could watch all around us as they talked or they read and they never knew nothing of love...it was before the origin of love." The beasts grew confident, defiant, over the other creatures in the world, and as is the way with hubris (pride and greed, two things I still dont understand over humility), Thor wanted to destroy them all.
But Zeus gave the creatures a second chance. Just as he "cut the legs off the whale, and dinosaurs into lizards" so he would teach them a lesson. He struck the earth with lightning and split the creatures in half. In the frenzy, the men and men split, the women and men split, and the women and women all split from their other halves. Now, much like Shel Silverstein's "The Missing Piece", the half creatures, humans, were cursed to search the world for their other half, and sex was our despirate and humble attempt to put ourselves "back together."
Therefore, Love is the feeling we have in our quest to find the rest of ourselves in someone else, to complete the picture, and physical love is just a part of that search.
I often feel like, while I love sex just for what it is (one hell of a calorie burn and a good time for all...at least if you're with me hahaha) that I am trying to "put myself back together" and that if I ever feel futile reverting to sex to "make things work" its just because I'm attempting to force something that isn't there. So the quest for my missing piece, as is true with all of us, goes on...
The tattoo is a symbol of that quest, that and the hope that I might one day find my "other half". Its two faces, pointing at one another poised to kiss, seperated by about 1/4" of air, but looking at the two faces, you can tell that were they joined they would form one face peering outward.
So here's my question to you, while the meaning and the tattoo itself is original and meaningful to me, do you think its warrented given the fact that I've never had a tattoo and it might inhibbit some of the work I do in theatre? (I've considered getting it in a brown ink to look like a birthmark color almost, so that I could attempt to cover it up need be, but I dont know if that's an adequeate solution...)
Are you pro or con? Input would be great, because while I dont always swing with the masses, I do like the input. Plus, I'm sorry, but chicks with tattoos are such a turn on. That and boobs. Girls with boobs are also very cool...(for more on this, see Kat's profile heheheh...)
