i am seriously on edge.
9-11: the anniversy is weighing hard on me
i saw it first hand and up close last year.
i saw it out a window and also saw it through the faces of 34 sixth graders.
this is what happened
I moved to NYC to teach last year. I half thought I was crazy at the time, but on the 4th day of my teaching career I was going over fractions with my sixth grade class. The teacher next door came and told me: "the twin towers are on fire!"
I had to gasp for air. But i looked out my window instead. The view was my favorite part of my class room, up on the 4th floor of a Brooklyn Jr. High school, a panoramic view of the city. As i saw the flames from both buildings, my students did as well. I thought how ironicly appropriate that we were going over fractions...
My kids asked me what had happened, thought since i was their teacher that i would have the answer. how unprepared i was, still am to deal with the kida agian this year. But the worst part of the day was that i told all my kids "don't worry, the WTC are the only buildings that are earthquake proof in Manhatan. They will never fall down."
But as we continued on watching i found how wrong i was. 34 sixth grades and me all watched them both fall. And all of a sudden i began to hate my view. The TV immage just looks flase compared to what we saw. Totally undescribable.
This year I have a day of remeberence planed. Six of my students lost family last year, i am not sure what the number is this year. But i will find out.
my school is on eggshells right now
we have to have a rememberence hour and lets just say last year brought out the worst in some of the kids.
i am breathing hard just wondering how many kids will be in school wednesday.
worried that again i will be at a loss for answers, knowing in fact that i will be.
suggestions please...
