Ugh... I really want to respond to the comments from my last journal entry but I have NO energy left at this point and yesterday I typed out a detailed journal about what is going on and then one wrong move and it was gone.
But anyway... back to reality. Tom ended up having emergency surgery because he had diverticulitis with complications. Below is a bit of information about the complications that can arise from diverticulitis and abscesses that can develop:
An abscess is an infected area with pus that may cause swelling and destroy tissue. Sometimes the infected diverticula may develop small holes, called perforations. These perforations allow pus to leak out of the colon into the abdominal area.
A large abscess can become a serious problem if the infection leaks out and contaminates areas outside the colon. Infection that spreads into the abdominal cavity is called peritonitis. Peritonitis requires immediate surgery to clean the abdominal cavity and remove the damaged part of the colon. Without surgery, peritonitis can be fatal.
So when we went to the ER he had peritonitis and they ended up removing a foot of his colon (and his appendix while they were in there). He now has a colostomy bag which he will keep for three months while he heals from the infection. Eventually they will have surgery to reconnect his plumbing and all should be good.
But.... WTF???
Talk about a misdiagnosis! It cost him his fucking COLON!
So anyway.... I've been at the hospital 12 hours/day since his surgery Sunday night. And I've slept MAYBE 8 hours since Saturday.
Being a grown up sucks. Can I go back to being 8 again?
