Yay, Wednesday's over! I'm kind of sorry to see it go. Today, in a phonetics class, we were examining speech sounds in languages besides English. Needless to say, it's quite an interesting sight to see 100 linguistics students all practicing phonetics at once ("eeeeehhhhhh" "rrrrrrrrrr" "brbrbrbrbrbbrrbbrb" "iiiiiiihhhhyaaaa" "lhalhalhalhalhalhalha") Whoo, that was fun!
OK, as I'm listening to the news on TV now (I tend to do that, I find you can get as much information from listening as you can from watching), I hear that PETA is running an ad in Vancouver that compares the dozens of women allegedly murdered by a serial killer and buried on the suspect's local pig farm to the slaughter of pigs for meat. (More)
I'm not generally a big fan of PETA, but I do respect their right to have their own opinions and voice them. This, though, is entirely uncalled for. It's vulgar. It's insulting. It's insensitive. And I vomit in their general direction for this one.
*Ahem*
So, you guys liked the Candiru fish? You won't find 'em around North America; they're illegal to own and import, I believe. Some might get through, but I stil think it hardly justifies the use of teeny-tiny Speedos to protect the tender urethras of men who shouldn't be wearing those things in the first place.
Algae of the Day
Volvox! These things form perfectly round little colonies and they just go and roll around all over the place. Pretty cool for a microbe, if you ask me...

that movie should be on my favorite list actually... 'bring out your dead...but im not dead yet *thund*'
i have studied the use of 'like' to the point where i'd call it a common planning device...i love phonetic script, i can write in phonetics better than in english! did you know that bilingual people use different parts of their brains to monolingual? and yknow the sapir-whorf paper on language and thought? well whenever i ask monolingual peeps what language they 'think' in, they kinda vaguely guess and often say english...but bilingual people who speak english as a second language almost always say english AND they answer really definitely and quick. i think that's really cool and weird. just thought you might be the one person who could appreciate that as a novelty hehe...
