Ah, there's nothing like starting a paper and getting a few hundred words done (I'm such a college kid...). Starting can be the hardest part, don't you agree? I'm still a few stories short of what I need for my project, so if anyone cares to contribute...
Who am I kidding, I'm lonely. My girlfriend is moving out of hospital to a residence on Monday...

Aaaaahh! Help! Need Canadians 18-25 to tell me stories so I can finish my sociolinguistics project by Monday! If you're interested, please please please let me know. I don't want to have to make up data (not thatI would ever do that, of course... )
I'll post an organism of the day soon as I start this paper...

...and where in israel did you spend time?
Yay, Wednesday's over! I'm kind of sorry to see it go. Today, in a phonetics class, we were examining speech sounds in languages besides English. Needless to say, it's quite an interesting sight to see 100 linguistics students all practicing phonetics at once ("eeeeehhhhhh" "rrrrrrrrrr" "brbrbrbrbrbbrrbbrb" "iiiiiiihhhhyaaaa" "lhalhalhalhalhalhalha") Whoo, that was fun!
OK, as I'm listening to the news on TV now (I tend to...

the volvox are really sweet, i might consider farming them to add to the list of my potential future occupations [dreaming about one day doing really cool job goes right along with the alternate reality thang...] i think they would be friendly and supportive and sing to me on special occasions.
i have studied the use of 'like' to the point where i'd call it a common planning device...i love phonetic script, i can write in phonetics better than in english! did you know that bilingual people use different parts of their brains to monolingual? and yknow the sapir-whorf paper on language and thought? well whenever i ask monolingual peeps what language they 'think' in, they kinda vaguely guess and often say english...but bilingual people who speak english as a second language almost always say english AND they answer really definitely and quick. i think that's really cool and weird. just thought you might be the one person who could appreciate that as a novelty hehe...

Tuesday's gone by, and so has the sociolinguistics exam I was cramming for last night. It went well. Yay.
OK, here's something interesting. I read a linguistics paper about a historical controversy in Sweden over the use of "ni" vs. "du," which both mean "you" in English. Kinda similar to the tu/vous thing in French. Anyway, at one point, folks in Sweden were so polarized...

'blue....no, green. *aaaaahhhhhhhhhhh*'
the best thing about that film is what they are doing to the cats throughout the movie in the background...so subtle, so funny.
i took one sociolinguistics course... not for me. It was a Linguistics course about the socioeconomic affects of displaced poeples in urban centers (focusing on language isolation of course)... i think that was the most borring class i took through all my schooling...

you know... I can't remember the last time I had a reason to say it.
I'll go with... zee! Cause it keeps the rhyme going in the alphabet. We're supposed to say zed in Canada.. what's up with that, us backwards people..

Ah, the weekend. It was a balmy 14 degrees today (Celsius, of course... 'twould be around 57 F), warm enough to go out and walk around without a coat. A really pleasant surprise.
We saw "The Ring," which I thought was fairly disturbing but had a lot of loose ends that needed thinking about, and "Bowling for Columbine," which was bitterly funny and brutally informative....

my pic is from halloween. i was a chassid. I passed out gelt and dreidles all night. but the sideburns are real and still rockin... so is the israeli. this weekend has been rough as you know. but im a stonch supporter of the human race and believe in us enough that we may find an peaceful answere if we try hard enough. so i support, as do most kibbutznics, a peaceful coexistance with the arabs. i also believe that an arab grandmother has the same dreams for her grandchild that my grandmother has for me. i refuse to buy into the jerry springer, wwf, george bush, nsync bullshit. Peace is possible.
Yeah.

Hellooo, November! As the wind blows harder and the rain falls colder, as the clouds shower forth snow and the streets turn a cold, murky gray, I begin to long for a nice sunny climate...

man, that's a beutiful insect.
sometimes i think that it's sad how people descriminate attractive animals from less-attractive ones. i refer of-course to the common standards- most people would be charmed by a butterfly and disgusted by a moth, even though they're not that different. i'm sad to say that i can't count myself out of this crowd, yet...
i hear you about school- it can really suck sometimes. of course- i never went, so i just rely on movies like:"animal house" and "meatballs".
later...

wow, mycology? are you gonna do that for a living? we need more scientists.
to cheer you up i will send you a choice selection of excepts from this my most recent photodiary! my scanner is busted so i'll have to borrow one or fix it but i'll get them to you asap! i dunno really how to upload them so i'll just be doing private viewings tee hee...
are you a latin fan also? i think latin is wondrous. canis est in via. dominus meus est partiallyblind. caecilius impluvium intrat. 'eheu' clamans. etc etc....some choice exerpts of a wasted education there as you can see!
don't feel shunned by your lady btw. the thing with family is that even when they are shoddy and treat you pretty badly, at least they owe that to you. with anyone else it can feel like an imposition, so if you need looking after it's easier to allow someone to do that out of obligation rather than as a favour. chin up! x
