My GF's got them, as well - and a battle-scar, too! Some scholars believe that in many premodern cultures childbirth was considered the female equivalent of going to war, and was honored just as much. Of course it was gendered in a way many of us wouldn't like now, but it was seen as the same: you're risking your life for the continuation of your people.
