Holy shit, things just keep on happening.
A friend of mine gave up his life pulling his family out of a fire, on Thursday.
He was not only a hero for that, but for basically being a good person every moment of his life. You know how, when people die, all of a sudden the become this "saint" in the eyes of everybody. We used to talk about Don that way when he was alive.
He could of left Moncton to go work the film business in Montral, Toronto and Halifax to make the big bucks and have a real career, like so many of us did. But he refused to leave his familly behind for weeks and months at a time, knowing that his time and presence were worth more than any job could buy.
He talk about every single detail of his family life on the sets and stages he worked on; these workplaces are high stress, high drug addiction and very ...well...rock and roll. People cheat on their spouses, blow cash on coke, strippers and booze, trying to forget the fact that they are away from their loved ones.
Don liked to party, but he never lost site of his priorities: providing a living for his family. He loved film and stage work, cause it gave him a lot of time off to be at his kids hockey games, karate practices, and teach them drumming, or just to hang out with them.
He talked about his families like they were his heroes, his idols, and he was just lucky enough to be allowed to be in their lives.
We used to say our golden rule was : "What would Don do?" Sounds cheezy, but this guy was my fucken idol.
He was funny, humble and loved life. He reminded everybody what was important, not with bullshit words, but with actions, simple deeds, a small joke.
A real, fucken, everyday hero.
