I have had the shittiest night ever. I wrote a movie review for my english class. It was a great paper until I typed the last (seriously, it was the last) word and fate intervened. Fate basically said "You are going to have to stay up three hours later than you want to because I am making your program crash and there is not a fucking thing you can do about it." Program crash, paper gone. It would not have been a big problem but I forgot to save during the writing of the paper so it all went out the window. I felt like crying.
I rewrote the fucking paper. It is not as good as the first one but it is just a rough draft so I have time to fuck with it.
Then I had to tackle another issue. I have a story due tomorrow for the school paper and I had not yet written. It was supposed to be on some fucking student retreat. I have no info on the retreat because the fuckers in charge do not like to respond to my e-mails.
I e-mailed my professor and advised her that I am changing my article from a story on a fucking retreat to an article that should (and it better fucking) appear in the Opinions section of our paper.
I wrote the Opinion paper on gay marriages. Have I got your interest now? Good.

Civil Unions Violate Civil Rights

America is raving-mad about gay marriages and for good reason. In a time when Janet Jacksons nipple is considered worthy of front-page news we should be mad. Our idea of what is right and just is being diluted by our government. The messages that are being touted by people like the President/Reverend George W. Bush are a mixed-bag of Hyper-Patriotism and religious zealousness.
Why is it that a gay couple being joined forever in holy matrimony should be thought of as wrong? The Declaration of Independence plainly states that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness. Whatever happened to the Separation of Church and State? The First Amendment to the Constitution says that the government cannot meddle in the affairs of religion. So how is that there can be a law prohibiting marriage of any sort?
People are fearful right now. There is an unjust war happening on soils that our military does not belong on and the biggest concerns in the news are nipples and gay marriages. Why should people not fear what is happening?
The only message that is being projected over the current debate about gay marriageis this: No person is safe.
If the religious powers that be have a problem with same-sex marriages, they should deal with it in their own forum. The Government should not and cannot intervene in these matters. There is no amendment to the First Amendment that says the Government may intervene in religious affairs if it is going to disrupt the harmony of the status quo.
The argument being presented by the Government is that homosexual people may live normal lives. They can hold jobs and have parades. They can start gay-oriented businesses and live in suburban communities next to heterosexuals. They can even hold a position in our Government. They just cant be united in a legal bond that entitles them to all of the liberties and benefits of a heterosexual couple.
This is a step back in the evolution of mankind. Why dont we just separate them from the majority entirely? Separate communities. Separate cubicles at work. Separate bathrooms and water fountains. Why dont we do this? It is because the idea of separate but equal was stopped with Brown vs. Board of Education. The law says that everyone is entitled to a fair stake in the American Dream.
But it is still a dream. America rarely frets over race relations now because it is noted that everyone has the same rights and responsibilities as a United States Citizen. Now we are worried about people trampling over the popular religious beliefs possessed by people in power. The Civil Union is being touted as the savior of all of our worries and fears. Civil Unions are the new back of the bus and that is a gross injustice.
Civil Unions violate Civil Rights and until marriages for gay couples are legal in the eyes of every insurance company, HMO, and State, then no person should be happy with the current State of the Union.
