Both... you build armies 'like' in civilizations, then when they 'encounter' each other you have the option to fight real time and control each division or let the computer resolve it. The latter choice I assume is for those types who prefer the strategic aspect.

Honestly, I'm not a very experienced gamer by any means of the definition. I've always just always enjoyed civilizations because I'm a history/anthropology dork--building your own empire? woo hoo. Anyway, a co-worker turned me on to Total War because it incorporates that aspect with the 'real time' aspect. You can play famous Roman historical battles and experiment with traditional armies ie you can changes the formation of your battle lines. I love it. Just in case you were wondering.
