Wow, was this ever one that struck a chord with me. The thing I wish I'd learned sooner is how much importance to place on happiness and enjoying what you do with life.
When I quit uni I fell into a "career" job and followed that path for about 9 years, despite never really being satisfied with it. The better I did the job, the more money I got and that became the goal.
Sad fact was that I ended up blowing more and more of that money on possessions and holidays to help me forget that my life was so unfulfilling and my job, frankly, such a load of bullshit.
At 31, I got a break - being made redundant with a little pay off. So I took an English language teaching course and moved abroad. First to Turkey, then Poland and now Portugal.
Now, I'm paid far less than I used to be and I have perhaps a quarter of the possessions, but I love what I do, the place where I live and the quality of my life overall.
Not everyone can do what they really love, but I implore you to at least try to find something that gives you some pleasure. We spend so much of our time working, it's essential to not hate it!
