Alien Big Cats in the UK.
There was an excellent photograph published in the newspapers last week of a black panther noshing down on some unfortunate fowl in the Welsh woodlands.
There are countless sightings of alien big cats roaming around the United Kingdom as well as reports of missing animals from farms, carcasses being found etc
The general consensus of opinion is that when the wild animals act was introduced by Parliament in the early 1970s many owners of exotic pets simply released their beasts into the wild rather than pay the pricey registration fees.
These cats have since been breeding in the wild and now cover most of the country.
Why arent they spotted more often, you may ask? Well, they are frequently sighted by witnesses of all description though such creatures are notoriously elusive preferring to shun humanity and spending most of their lives hiding up trees.
In Africa, where of course leopards are native are recognized by their kills more often than actual sightings and so have gained a semi mystic status. Its no coincidence that the notorious Congolese assassin cult the Leopard men chose such a beast as their totem. And so this most stealthy of felines has gained a reputation similar to the ninja of Japan or the native American Apache warriors spawning riddles such as Q; How many Ninja/Apache/Leopards are hiding in this room/farm right now? A; As many as want to
A couple of years ago I took my Sick Thing on a trip to Wallingford, a small market town by the River Thames in Oxfordshire.
We went down to the river to watch the bats at around 3am and delightedly observed that if one sits really quietly their squeaking song is audible, at least in part, to the human ear.
Its a strangely geometric noise quite unlike anything else Ive ever heard and one of those things so alien its difficult to really remember or forget.
So, caught up in the being quiet and hearing strange things mood, we creep back through sleeping streets and what do we spy up ahead? Only a panther on the other side of St. Leonards Square. It looked at us and we looked at it and just before we could really register what we were seeing it darted off up a street at right angles to us and out of view.
Now I knew such beasts had been seen in the area, especially in Crowmarsh over the river and Burford where they are apparently quite a pest on local farms and game reserves and although very much impressed I wasnt terribly surprised.
I told this to my stunned girlfriend who didnt really believe the evidence of her own eyes, but the thing we saw stood about a meter high at the shoulder and was at least 2m long.
Not the biggest cat Ive ever seen as I have a Godfather who used to work in a Zoo and introduced me, in the past, to a fully grown black panther, a cheetah and some adorable snow leopard cubs. But it certainly was no house cat.
Well thats my tale and I wonder if any of you fine folk have had any similar encounters of a crypto zoological nature?
