Mr_Zero Goes Norma Rae Like a Muthafucka:
(OK so that was a cheesy title for the Kevin Smith fans)
Almost one year since I had some semblance of a social life. There was that brief stint back in November, when I had broken fingers, since then, nothing. You might be wondering why. Well far be it from me to leave you hanging.
I work at night. Not like 3pm - 11pm or something similar like most night shifts. We're talking 9pm til around 6am. When everyone is out doing fun stuff with each other, I am busting my ass getting that beer you are drinking on a truck so it can get to the store or bar. For me this is a problem. A multifaceted problem.
I moved here from Arizona about 2 years ago. I was one step from living under bridges and in parks due to extended unemployment. I moved here because I didn't fancy that idea so, it could be worse.
When I was offered my current job position I was told that it was only temporary. My employer cycles people through the shift because it is a pain in the ass. They want to make sure you are going to hang around if they are going to pay you 60-70 thousand dollars minimum a year. I dig where they are coming from. I was fine with the whole proving myself thing. We have a worker's union, How bad could they fuck me? Heh.
About three weeks ago, I find out that they hired 2 guys from another distributor and didn't put them throiough the same system. One could argue that they have experience and you would be right. They have experience at driving a route truck but, that's not the job they are doing. The are doing the job that is the stepping stone to where I want to be. Furthermore, our union contract only has a provision in it that managment can assign anyone they want to run a route but says nothing about any other position.
A week goes by and noone seems to care. Let me rephrase that, they don't care enough to do anything about it. They screamed and cried to each other but were unwilling to say anything to a manager about it. I asked a couple why they weren't and the response was generally, "I don't want to lose my job."
I am lucky enough to have few bills I can pay most of them by doing just about any job. I like having the extra money though. I like being able to help friends that are in need. I like to be able to reach into my pocket and hand the person who is down and out some money to spend. I like to buy friends stuff I think they will like. You know what I hate?
I hate hypocrisy. I hate lying. I hate cheating and I hate dishonesty. (This is not to say I dont tell small lies every so often to spare a persons feelings. Yes I know this makes me somewhat all of the above, you gotta love the irony.)
I am just about out of time here. Summer is here and work starts earlier and gets out later. I will update with the rest of this story tomorrow.
I hope everyone is doing well. Sorry for the absence for so long. This all isn't over yet.

p.s. a minor lie to save someone's feelings from being needlessly hurt does not make you a hypocrite or a liar.
