I never thought I'd say something like this, but I love working out. I love how easy it is to do, now. I love looking down at the scale and seeing fifteen pounds missing. I love looking in the mirror and seeing my shoulders and chest muscles. I love that quitting my workout early never occurs to me anymore--in fact, sometimes, when my time's up, I'll shrug and keep going.
(But I hate baseball cards.)
It's not like I was fat--maybe twenty pounds overweight. I've got a really high metabolism; much of my life, I've lived on snack cakes and soda, but it's only started to show in the last five years or so. My shoulders were shrinking and my love handles were growing. Now I drink a lot of iced tea, no sugar, and I stick to diet soda when I need my caffeine fix. If I really need a candy bar (I've got a sweet tooth that just won't quit), I grab one of those granola or protein bars from the health food aisle. Or I get on the bike and ride it for 45 minutes.
Which is really what makes this work. Fuck special diets. Fuck arcane workout routines. Fuck the whole idea of trying to game your body into magically reshaping itself with as little effort as possible on your part. Getting into shape is simple: eat better, exercise more. It's not easy, but it's simple.
