I quit smoking New Years Day and if you chew ALOT of the nicotine gum all day for the first week, it really helps. After the second week, you might still think about smoking all the time, but you'll physically crave it less.

The rubberband thing worked for Larry Hagman (J.R. on Dallas)-but I read somewhere that he just started chain-smoking doobies instead.
