That quote at the end of your comment - fucking brilliant. (Was it Lyotard or someone else?) It's what I've been arguing for bloody ages over here (certainly since 1985) and until really recently everyone seems to think I'm on crack or something. They simply ignore it and retreat to the complexities of Hiedegger, Sartre or Merleau Ponty - all of whom are interesting in their own ways of course. I think there's a real fear about the "loss" of individual sovereignty and freedom and the messiness that ensues from there. Oh, and also perhaps how it suddenly makes oneself rather more responsible for other people. Oops. You see I hear way too often things like: "If he/she wants to kill him/herself, then that's entirely their choice to make and I will not do anything to subvert or alter that choice" or "This teen is choosing to be an offender and he can continue to choose to be that way but he will face consequences." No mention or understanding that these human beings are in situations where they feel powerless, where they feel no hope for ever feeling like they're not just trash. There are always contexts and these aren't just backdrops, they form an integral part of who we are and can choose to be.
Ooops, gone off on a bit of a rant! Sorry 'bout that. I blame society.
How about a "fuck x" each day? (Btw, I doubt that "Fuck teleology" can be bettered!) Today I choose: "Fuck sympathy."
