As we observe this Memorial Day and honor those men and women who have sacrificed their lives to protect or improve the lives of others, perhaps the best way we can honor them is to do what we can to make sure that not another human dies for the wrong reason.
I strongly believe we need to ask our politicians in Washington D.C. to re-evaluate just why we are in Iraq and Afghanistan (Which has just become the longest war that America has ever been involved in) then set and announce what our goals should be based on those re-evaluations.
There is a saying in the Arab world that "The son speaks for the father". No better example exists than when President George W. Bush conned the United states into thinking that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction and proceeded to complete the job that his father, President George H. W. Bush started after Iraq invaded our oil supplier, Kuwait.
Since the second invasion of Iraq in 2002, no weapons of mass destruction have been found, and the Bush administration expanded the con by trying to convince everyone that there is a tie between Iraq and the Al Queda attacks on 9-11. All the while corporations like Haliburton and Black Water have made billions in profits by selling goods and services to our military for astronomically inflated prices. There are now more contractors in Iraq than military enlisted military. And the number of Americans killed in Iraq and Afghanistan has log ago surpassed the total number of people killed in the 9/11 attacks.
On May 30, we'll pass the $1 trillion mark for the cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. That's a trillion dollars we could have used to create jobs, keep people in their homes, or make sure sick kids can see a doctor.
With most of that trillion dollars going directly to companies like Haliburton, for which former Vice President Dick Cheney was a board member, it is time that we stop making weapons be the U.S. top export and make it illegal for any company to profit from war.
I would also like to see the draft re-instated with the requirement that the sons and daughters of Congressmen, Senators and board members of Defense Contractors be the first to be drafted.
