So Captured Aural Phantasy Theater was pretty awesome. Turns out they found the scripts to a bunch of old Horror and Suspense comics from the 40s and 50s and read them radio style, with music, sound effects, and screened images. Very fun show.
The show was held in the Alexandria Hotel, a historic landmark dating back to 1906, which is now been renovated and used as low income housing. I gotta be honest, I looked pretty hard, but I couldn't find the renovation. Maybe they were inside the actual apartments, which I did not see, but save for the security guards in the lobby, I would have thought the place was condemned. I knew for sure it was haunted. I think a ghost tried to touch my no-no spot when I ran to the bathroom during intermission. I felt like I walked into The Shining. I was waiting for phantoms to manipulate me into killing everyone at the show. Luckily all I did that night was have a few laughs. Seriously though, it's a beautiful building, and I honestly felt like the atmosphere it created was so strong-- the ballroom where the show was held was this massive hall, with peeling paint and stained stain glass ceilings. It was like sitting in the belly of a whale... decorated by Edgar Allan Poe. Personally, I hope they don't completely renovate it, because the decay really does lend a certain charm to it and a definite sense of history.
By the time I got home and found parking at the apartment, I didn't even want to drive again all night. Traffic was horrendous. But I still thought about catching Caligari at the Nuart, and I had time to kill so I went up to watch a bit of TV before heading out again. Buuuuuut I fell asleep. An early end to Halloween night, but I had fun. I'm sure compared to a lot of folks, it must seem pretty boring, and it probably is. Next year...
