Oh fuck yes I rock.... Shit.. That's the worst pun....
First work.
Ok so work was stupidly busy today. I still didn't get to look at the black diamonds and still didn't order the materials I need. But that's ok because mom's thing shouldn't take long to complete.
I just need me sissy's boyfriend to email me so I can find out when the next three conjunctions of the moon and venus are going to be!...
Anybody into astronamy?
I fear he's the only one who can tell me.
Ok so I stuck around after work trying top get a moment to talk to me boss, eventualy did... Just to ask about the diamonds. She says the cheaper ones she has are $25. I have no idea how big though.
Then right back home I went. Got in at 5:10 so i had enough time to throw my rocks in my briefcase and run otu to the bus to the lapidary club. I finished the quartz with that crust of crystals on the back, then started and finished a very very clear quartz.
Also, I brought in a couple chunks of this stuff. Not sure what it is. It's very soft, very crumbly, it's all little crystals so they like to break apart. The first try failed because I tried to cut too close to my pattern with the saw. Too harsh, cracked it right in two. After I did my quartz I went back to it and decided to grind it down to the pattern on the wheel, which took like, no time at all. It's soo soft. It was beginning to chip around the edges, luckily not into the pattern, so I went to a softer grit.
I'm sitting there shaping it and the dome sheers right off at an angle.... However, I was still able to shape it down by hand, round it off and put it back on a stick so I could finish it. As I was getting it ready I realized this doesn't just give a nice chaledony effect all around (Kind of an irredesence.) But there's an almost perfect cat's eye in it! I successfully shaped it down the rest of the way on a very new 400 grit belt on the rubber wheel. Took out the nicks, polished it up and it's beautiful!
Oh I could cream myself... And I bet that it will hold a dye... But even if I put it in tonight, I wouldn't have been able to get it until january 9th. The club's closed for the holidays, and I wanna show this puppy off for a while... But man it's so fragile... I'm going to have to set it very carefully.
Looking at it now I can see huge natural fractures that could cause break it apart any time. But at least now I know it can be done, and can try to find more solid pieces I can cut from.
The two on the bottom right are blood stone though you can't see the colors very well. The one above them is an obsidian called Apache Tears.
I put the quarts with that crust on the back on a piece of black plastic for some contrast. The larger of the clear quartz at the top is perfectly clear. Not a flaw in that rock.
The center top is obviously the cat's eye. Damnit I love that stuff... I'm going to make so many of those things.
Ok me should sleepy now.
