The Indonesian tsunami death toll is over 100K today. It's the worst thing that's happend to humanity in my lifetime...well, the AIDS pandemic has killed more people, but that's taken years. It's the worst single event that's happen to humanity in my lifetime. The scope of that many dead people is beyond me. I don't know 1,000 people off the top of my head.
Sunday, the day it happend, a bunch of us were at my mom's house for a belated Christmas dinner. My dad stayed until late and would only watch the news about this stuff. He said it was important to get an idea of what to do in a situation like that. Not only did I not want to watch that stuff on the TV, but it seemed kind of pointless to me. The only thing you can do is try to get to higher ground and those people had no warning at all. If they would have had some warning a lot of people wouldn't be dead. It took hours and hours for that wave to reach the coasts of India and Sri Lanka. The water only went 2000Kilometers inland. Hell, your grandma could make it that far in a few hours if she was motivated by a 30-50 foot wall of water.
You never know what's gonna get ya. Death is really just a moment away at any given time. I don't think we could live thinking about it all the time, I mean, I'm fucking stressed enough as it is. I do think that it should inform our lives though.
It doesn't take a tsunami to kill you. Go tell some one you love them.
