ok, ok...so, my wife worked all weekend on location out at the docks in long beach. i went to a friend's GREAT party on saturday.
now, the cool thing about my wife's gig is that any car that's on the lot, they'll inspect for free. so, since our 13 year old beater ford taurus is getting ready to kick it, leaking radiator fluid (after we dropped $1000 into it just a year ago), overheating, blah blah bling blah, the plan was for me to drive the car to her set and the mechanics would, awesomely, check it over and tell us what the deal was.
the only caveat: we live in west hollywood. the shoot, on sunday, after the GREAT party, was at the docks in long beach, about 35 miles down the 405 to the 110, ya ta ta.
i made sure not to drink much at the party, but some people had some great weed, and since i never smoke, i got pretty high. it was fine, great people, grilled sausage and chicken, rums and coke, nice conversation, a green and purple cake with aliens on it. fun times.
the next day, i put some water and coolant in the car, hopped on the freeways with no air conditioning (of course) and rolled down to long beach...straight into monster traffic. i had one eye on the road and the other two on the temperature gauge, which wonderfully stayed right below half. i patted the steering wheel soothingly, whispering to the car "you're doing great."
got to the lot...ever driven by the docks in long beach? there's the coolest, hugest green bridge that you drive over. i can't compare it to the bridges in SF, but for LA it was pretty neat. I couldnt help wonder, as the road over the bridge kept going up up up up, what it would be like to be on that fucker when an earthquake struck.
got on the lot, hung out in the air conditioned trailer and read wolves of the calla, alternating that with watching gone with the wind which Ive never seen. we ate lunch, and lemme tell you, craft services ROCKS. for lunch we had a choice of seared ahi tuna, baked chicken, or pork chops and applesauce, spinach and mushrooms as a side, and german chocolate cake (which I dont like, but isnt that cool?) for dessert. they eat that way every day, as those of you who work on set know very well, you lucky fuckers.
anyway, so then the coolest mechanics looked at the car and told us the damage was not bad, just to maybe get a new cooling fan for $100. then I kissed my wife goodbye, drove home, went to damiano for some pizza and beer, and came home and watched stripes which I have to admit I didnt really like.
how was YOUR weekend?
