According to legend, Krampus appears on the night of December 5-6, prowling the streets during that night in what is known as Krampusnacht (The Night of the Krampus, in German) either alone or together with Saint Nicholas better known as Santa Claus, ringing cowbells and rusty chains to frighten with his presence.The Krampus is a symbol of his presence.
His appearance is represented by an incubus-like creature. His devilish face is adorned with horns on his forehead, a long red tongue and black hair. His body is covered with thick dark fur, and his legs are goat-like, similar to those of a faun. In most images he is shown with a basket on his back, where he places the bad children to take them to hell and eat them.

Según la leyenda, Krampus aparece en la noche del 5 al 6 de diciembre, merodeando las calles durante esa noche en lo que se conoce como Krampusnacht (La noche del Krampus, en alemán) ya sea solo o junto a San Nicolás más conocido como Santa Claus, haciendo sonar cencerros y cadenas oxidadas para asustar con su presencia.
Su apariencia es representada por una criatura parecida a un íncubo. Su rostro diabólico está adornado con cuernos en la frente, una larga lengua roja y una cabellera negra. Tiene el cuerpo cubierto por un tupido pelaje oscuro, y sus patas son de cabra, similares a las de un fauno. En la mayoría de imágenes es mostrado con una canasta en su espalda, en donde coloca a los niños malos para llevarlos al infierno y comérselos
