I wrote these two paragraphs on BabyCenter.com on a topic of Should toddlers watch tv? The second paragraph is a more in depth paragraph on commercials.
I don't ever watch tv myself so it is quite easy to keep it off. My son is 19 months old and we didn't get a tv until last october, when he was 17 months old. Since then, we watch PBS only. I refuse to turn to any other channel because I have a big problem with todays media and commercial influence. Think about it, commercials are about luxiourous cars, the newest cleaning aid, or the best tasting pop. It only teaches children to become a money grubbing, materialistic american. I have chosen to not raise
my son with the standards of today's american culture. Our time is spent creating and exploring instead of watching the fake, materialistic world on the little box in our living room.
Do you realize the impact of commercials on a child? Do youcensor them? Todays commercials are the basis of american culture.
Superficiality, money, greed, power, material items, ect. This is just the begining of a child growing up to be just another superficial american. A child watching commercials see's luxiourious cars, the newest toy EVERY kid has, mountain dew...what kind of influences do you think these are giving your child? It might lower their self esteem if their mommy can't afford to buy the toy "every kid has
to have", or when they are older they might not accept
others as they are because all they have known was fake superficial glamour.

Good post. If I were to have kids I'd like to bring them up in a similar way. My nephews are 5 months old and already spend hours infront of the TV every day - I despair. It simply cannot be good for a child, it's bad enough for adults.
