Over the past 10 days its been a real lesson in figuring out what I can and cant eat. Theres a lot thats easy. No cakes, no chips, no deep fried stuff. And I dont keep it in the house so theres no real temptation.
The real battle is picking and choosing what to fight for.
I used to make these sandwiches. Think grilled cheese with a fried egg between them. I had the hankering to make one today. So I sat down and tabulated the calories, 450 calories for just one sandwich which had 2 pieces of cheese, 2 pieces of bread and 1 egg and 1 Tablespoon butter.
So I compromised. I had 2 eggs, 2 pieces of lush thick wheat bread, a shit ton of spinach and lettuce and tomato, 1 piece of cheese and a lil bit of mayo for a total of 410.
Not only did I calorically win but I made the healthier decision. Using pam on the grill instead of oil. Keeping the bread natural and yummy. Going for veggies. Not using butter.
Yes they were both high calorie meals but I couldnt gone for the simple pleasure. The comforting cheesy food. Instead I realized what I was craving (eggs and cheese) and incorporated them into a healthier option. If I had eaten the grilled cheese I know for a fact Id probably be hungry pretty soon and back in my kitchen looking to eat again.
Thats what this is about when people say changing your lifestyle" it's not a diet. Its just making smarter choices. Its not about denying yourself what you want, its about having what you want (within reason) but also having the things your body needs to survive. I cant believe it took years and years of dieting and classes to get it, but it finally made sense today.

I'm part of an organic coop this year and our weekly pick up starts in three weeks. I'm super excited to have fresh veggies every week and am already looking up recipes! hehe
