Ok....this could be a biggie.......

I've been reading Right Brained Child in a Left Brained World......
Both Aleks and I score very high and I have marginal autistic "tendencies"...
So, what does this mean.....well I've been reading this book to better understand his recent diagnosis of ADD and related learning disabilities. According to this writer, there is a direct correlation between extreme right brain functioning and ADD. These kids are products of a very, fast paced society that is becoming more and more visual based. Children are becoming stimulated by more visual stimuli than any other and in rapid succession creating low attentions spans. However, what is very interesting, is that this particular writer, focuses less on the "disability" and more on the extreme abilities of these children. More often than not, these children score extremely high in other areas of intelligence and the same teaching methods used for gifted children also work on children with ADD and ADHD. What is also interesting is that autism is the most extreme use of the right brain. I myself, show autistic tendencies. I am not autistic but have signposts symptoms of stimulation overload and have the ability to tap into what this writer calls "hyper focus". In order to be able to cope with left brain activities such as organization and more linear tasks I hyper focus. I can block out most other stimuli and power through linear tasks. I also do this at a very fast pace which really annoys people sometimes (I also don't really give a shit usually. Hehehe.) I get alot accomplished but it is often the only way I can accomplish linear tasks. If I don't hyper focus, my attentions wanders and I get very bored. Meaning, I probably have ADD too. As a kid, I had a myriad of the symptoms as well but somehow managed to tap into the hyper focus at an early age. I'm absolutely fascinated with this book. Many of the quirks I have that I thought were just me being a wacko, emotional or just weird are described verbatim in this book. Do you know how empowering that is? It's nice to know that I'm not "just being over sensitive" but that yeah, no shit, I AM SENSITIVE. Basically right brained people absorb more stimuli and take in more information that left brained people. I've developed my own quirky little habits to deal with over stimulus but now I have a reason behind it, not that I just feel awful or strangely tired and what not. Cool!
yumchen:
What an interesting sounding book. I have been lent a lot of great books from some very smart and interesting people I know. I love it when that happens. I alway learn something new and am usually entertained.
