I'm utterly baffled....

Can anyone tell me what the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey is really supposed to mean? The movie goes from the computer and Dave dueling wits to this strange conclusion that looks like part acid trip, part failed film school project. What the hell is that baby all about? Can anyone give me some fucking answers?
