Just got back from 9 days at Anytown Leadership Institute. It makes me realize how much hatred and injustice there is in the world, and how we need to do everything we can to stand up for the rights of others, especially those groups that have been marginalized and silenced throughout history.
People sometimes minimalize the effect that one person's voice can have, but Anytown teaches that social activism and fairness comes from speaking out in any way you can. When I hear something I disagree with, especially something that seems hateful toward another group, I identify it by owning my opinion. And I think therein lies the secret to personal activism. No one wants to be told that they are wrong, but if you own your feelings or emotions toward someone's behavior, it becomes somehow easier to speak out.
