As I write this, I'm sitting in my stepfather's recliner, desperately trying to fight off the food coma that is about to set in. There's classic rock playing in the background, and occasionally I can hear the laughter drift in from the garage as my 83-year-old grandmother cracks jokes that would make most people blush. It's good to be back.

My short-lived homecoming was kept under wraps so that I could surprise Mom for Mother's Day, and to say that the surprise worked would be an understatement. I don't know that I've ever seen a look of such complete shock and bewilderment as when she came out the side door and saw me walking up the sidewalk. That single moment was more than worth the hoops I had to jump through in order to arrange this trip.

In about 14 hours, I'll be back on a plane, Arizona-bound once again. When I return, I'm going to take a bit of a sabbatical from the extensive drinking and partying. As much as I enjoy it, I find that it's not condusive to accomplishing some of the goals I've established for myself, and it's long past time for me to start getting a little more serious about my health. That's not to say that I won't still go out and spend time with folks - just that I'm going to make a valiant effort to do it without the drinking, at least for awhile.

Last summer, when I first started P90x, I didn't drink for the first 30 days, and I saw tremendous results right out of the gate. I've made several attempts to get back on track with the program, but I've continuously allowed drinking and partying to take precedence over getting into shape, and thus I've been unable to get back into any kind of routine. It's not easy to get up and work out at 6am when you went to bed hammered only four hours before, and the steady weight gain over the past few months is proof positive that what I've been doing hasn't been working.

For now, I'm going to wander back out to the garage and visit with the relatives. It's hard to say when I'll have another opportunity to get back here and see everyone, so I probably shouldn't waste it. Until next time.
