I think Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos may have ascended the throne to take their place as my absolute favorite live band. There's just something about the atmosphere when they're onstage that I can't quite put my finger on, but I always go home feeling euphoric.
_Sylar_ showed up a little before 7pm, and we linked up with Dave and Kate for what should have been a quick dinner at Native New Yorker, but a terribly inept server put a big dent in those plans. Whenever I'm at a restaurant, I have a tremendous level of patience and tolerance because I know how hard servers work and I know how difficult their job can be sometimes, but last night was just ridiculous. On any given night, we should have been able to get in and out of there in half hour or so, but it took well over an hour of shitty service for us to finally be on our way to the show.
We got into the Rhythm Room just as the first band was finishing up, and the place was PACKED. There were probably twice the number of people that had been at the last Margot show, and I can pretty much guarantee the place was sold over capacity, because you could barely even move in there. After getting a round of drinks, we watched the second band play a couple of songs before migrating out to the patio, where Dave was accosted by some creepy girl who wanted to borrow his ashtray. Kate and _Sylar_ bought matching shirts, and we had a chance to chat with Eric for a few minutes before it was time for Margot to take the stage.
They kicked the show off with one of my favorites, "Children's Crusade on Acid," and from there it was well over an hour of some of the best live music I've ever experienced. Kate and I sang along to the classic stuff from the first record, and I kept flitting between her and Dave and _Sylar_ and the bar, dancing around and belting out the lyrics and drinking entirely too much whiskey. When it came time to settle up with the bar, I was a bit shocked at how much I had spent on drinks for our little group, but fuck it - I was having far too much fun to care all that much.
We hung out on the patio and talked with Richard for awhile after the show, then went around to the back of the club to say our goodbyes to the rest of the band. Kate wound up making a new friend and bonding over their love for high school speech team - apparently, their two schools almost competed against each other in Nationals or something along those lines. I don't know, I wasn't paying all that much attention. We headed home around 12:30, with Dave and Kate amusing themselves by using my Nintendo DS to draw dicks of various shapes and sizes.
After stocking up on more booze, _Sylar_ and I came back here and proceeded to pull another all-nighter. We watched an episode of "Undeclared," then some standup comedy for a couple of hours, then just sat on the living room floor talking and drinking, both of us lamenting the fact that we had stayed up entirely too fucking late - pretty much a repeat performance of the last time that we hung out. She headed home early this morning to catch some sleep before work (at least she wasn't on a double this time), and I crashed pretty hard.
I'll say this much: talking to her at the SG party was definitely the highlight of the event for me. It's been a long time since I've met someone I had so much in common with and was so instantly comfortable around, and every time I've hung out with her has been an absolute blast. She's nothing short of fantastic, I enjoy her company immensely, and I am totally glad that I walked over and struck up a conversation with her that night.
I slept for a few hours before waking up to go have lunch with Dave. Neither of us were feeling all that great, and eating a big lunch certainly didn't do us any favors. Combined with my complete lack of energy, I elected to skip out on the usual Thursday night festivities, opting instead to come home and go back to sleep. I woke up about an hour ago, ate a bowl of cereal, and then sat down to write this blog. And now I've gotta wrap things up, because in nine minutes I have to be on a conference call.
To summarize: great show, great company. One of the best fucking nights I've had in a long time, and despite how tired I may be, I'm still smiling about it.
