WE CAN BE THE CHANGE!
So I guess no one gives a shit about world issues.. either that or they saw how long my last blog was and didn't bother reading it. Regardless, I got no feedback when I was expecting a lot more. I guess no one really cares. Well... if you're someone who doesn't really care about world issues and the shit going on... perhaps you won't want to read this blog either because it's about how we can all do our part. I just have to accept that not everyone cares.
I think everyone is able to contribute to a charity of their choice, no matter how big or small the contribution. We can all find small ways to help out one another, and if enough people listen, learn, and give... you have the potential to make a big impact! Whether you are giving food and clothes to the salvation army, going online and donating money to charities or causes you believe in, signing a petition. By you giving, can change someone elses life forever!
I almost feel like crying because I thought back to my childhood. My mom was a single parent, diagnosed with a disability at a young age. Even if she wanted to work, daycare was too expensive and she was the only parent. We lived off welfare and often times I remember her skipping meals just to ensure I had a full belly. At christmas time, if it weren't for caring people with big hearts, I wouldn't have had great presents and a turkey dinner. If it weren't for food banks, I would have gone hungry. It takes a lot of courage for a single parent to go to a food bank and admit that they can't survive on their own... If it weren't for the kindness and willingness from people who give, I would have had a much harder upbringing than I already had.
I feel blessed to be brought into a home where things weren't handed to me. I learned the difference between 'needing' and 'wanting'. I learned the value of a dollar! I learned to appreciate the little things, and take pleasure in the presents or new clothes I would receive. Now that I am an adult, I have been able to indulge in my 'wants'. I believe a large part of me wanting to give, was because so much has been given to me. Not only food or clothes, but experiences, morals, and values.
I really don't mean to preach. It isn't my intention to be annoying and tell people what to do. I just maybe think people aren't aware of how much GOOD they would be doing for someone else. The only feeling better than receiving a gift, is giving one and seeing the joy it brings to others. For those who are fortunate enough to have everything come so plentiful, it doesn't hurt to give back. Something as small as throwing a quarter in those donation boxes that places like McDonalds or Tim Hortons have!!
I think something I look forward to doing when my career is on the go, is finding ways of educating or promoting things I believe in. For those who don't know, I want to be a tattoo artist. People pay a lot of money to get quality tattoos done. People are ALWAYS looking for a bargain and will take it whenever they see it. I think it would be kind of cool to set up 'raffle tickets' where people pay $1 or $5 for the chance to win a free tattoo!! And proceeds could be divided between organizations, and charities. Even if people 'giving' is to potentially get something out of it in return... They would still be giving which is the main point!!
Or, have a promotion were people who don't care WHAT they get tattooed on them, to tattoo something symbolizing to recycle, protect animals, protect the earth, protect each other... and have a day when I do those kinds of tattoos for free! They would share that same message with others, everyday, for the rest of their lives. Think about how many people that story would reach?!
I feel like a freaking crazy Christian trying to get my point across... I hate to sound like a preacher. I am not religious.. just an idealist. Small changes or sacrifices we make, can have a profound end result. I can't wait to be able to make BIG changes! Reach LOTS of people! But until then, I'll make the small changes in my life, such as conserving water and electricity, recycling, and giving anything I can spare. Or writing blogs HOPING someone will read it and want to be the change we need to make this a better world... Although I have little hope anyone will read this and actually care, I still have to make the attempt.

A lot of people care about world issues. There's a number of active topics on the boards and within groups where these issues are discussed, it's nothing personal against your writing style or anything.

I completely agree. My dad was a single parent who raised both my sister and I, and would work 7 days a week to make sure we never went hungry, and I think I'm a better person for not having been spoiled. We got a lot of our things through the help of other people, so I try to do what I can to help other people too. It doesn't take much effort, I wish more people would take some initiative, like you!
