my friend, victor, and i pretty much have the same job, we just work for competing companies.. our jobs are terribly stressful at times and any chance to get away is viewed as necessary and, admitedly, a little guilt inducing..
we decided to take some time off together.. and, because it seems as though we were both raised by drag queens, we settled on a short trip to new york.. specifically to see the broadway show "a chorus line."
the night of the show we had a fabulous dinner with a fantastic bottle of wine.. so fantastic was the wine, that we stayed at the restaurant longer than planned and had to run to the theatre, arriving just as they were flashing the lights, telling everyone to get in their seats.
the show was perfect, of course.. since i own both the soundtrack and the movie version, it was all victor could do to keep me from jumping up and singing along with the cast.. instead i bounced around in my seat and mouthed the words to all the songs.
we decided to walk back to the hotel after the show and were singing and soft shoeing our way down 46th street when i noticed a young couple standing near the corner, kind of squaring off. i took victor's arm and indicated "quiet" to him, so that we might be able to eavesdrop a little.
they didn't seem to notice us and, as we got closer, i heard the guy say to his girlfriend/wife "if you ever disrespect me again, i will fucking beat your ass."
i was stunned. victor was stunned. the girl, however, didn't seem to be stunned and stood there, so close to him that her nose was almost touching his nose.
we were even with the couple at this point and were walking so slowly that we were almost stopped.. the guy noticed us and turned to look.. i did that thing where i turned around and started walking backward, letting him know that i had heard what he said and planned to keep listening.. i was wearing a dress, stockings and 3" heels, but i was ready to help this poor girl at the drop of a hat.
victor, who is a 6'3" teddy bear of a gay man, just sighed and started to take off his overcoat, noting that "goddamit.. i didn't come out dressed for this.. i'm going to have to kick this guy's ass in a tie!"
the girl took his diverted attention as her out and she turned and quickly started walking in the opposite direction.. the guy was so busy watching us that he didn't realize it until she was halfway down the street.. he started to walk after her and we watched for a while until she rounded the corner and disappeared.. he stopped following her and just stood on the sidewalk, hands limp at his sides while victor and i turned and walked the other way.
