My First Car
I didn't get my driver's licence until I was 25. And because Ontario has graduated licencing I didn't get my full licence until I was 30. C'mon - I lived in a big city - I didn't need a car!
So I got my licence and drove my mom's Camry... getting braver and braver until I could drive in downtown Toronto. Oh sure, I had a few setbacks... that jogger that I slightly 'bumped' and that skid when I didn't really grasp how cars perform in slippery snow.
And then I fell in love. I worked near a Mercedes dealership and I went by it one day and saw it... a Smart Car!
After about a month of waiting for my car to arrive from France I had it. My first car! A cute little white and grey smart car. It was great for popping around in the city. I could parallel park like a star!
The first month I had it I was one of the first people in North America to have one. I felt like a movie star... people on the street would stop and stare at my driving by - it was great!
And then my job changed... and I was doing a one hour commute each way to work and back. In snow and sleet... As far as gas milage it was great. And it actually did quite well in snow. But it was still a little scary.
One day in particular it was a huge snowstorm and I was driving in the two clear tire marks in the snow on the highway. A huge tractor-trailor comes up behind me and passes me. Just as it gets beside my car it skids and flips. Luckily for me it flipped the other way... landed on it's roof in the ditch. I had to navigate through the wave of snow it set off.
Still. I loved that car. I actually brought a Christmas tree (a small one) home in it. I used to drive my basset hound around and she would look out the back window and people behind me would laugh and point.
The Smart Car died a year ago. It's engine went. I actually cried. I was very attached to that car.
Now I have a Hyundai - not nearly as cute but it is nice to be able to carry four people! And some really cool people drive blue Hyundais!
