In April 2009 I fucked up my right ankle. I was going out to guard duty while in Afghanistan and I stepped on the edge of a sandbag. When I shifted my weight, the ankle rolled. I finished my three hour guard shift and went on a three day mission. I was MEDEVACed out because I couldn't get my boot back on. My ankle blew up. I did 5 days of physical therapy and two months behind a desk. Then we headed out to the mountains of Afghanistan for 3 months. My pack weighted between 80-90 lbs. The lowest elevation we were at was 8000 ft. The only way I could hack it was pain killers. When we got back I tried to have it fixed, more physical therapy, ankle braces and walking casts.
Went to Ortho today and I'm getting surgery 29 June 11. I have ankle instability. There is a 7 degree difference in the space between my bones when moving up and down. The problem is the doctor will have to cut into my tattoo in order to preform the surgery. That sucks. He's gonna try to keep the damage to a minimum. My recovery time is 4-6 months. There goes my hunting season.
Now that I'm in the WTU I'm getting Medical Boarded. My Nurse Case Manager says my Med Board could take as little as 6-9 months! That's pretty damn quick. I thought it could take up to 2 years. I guess we'll see.
