An odyssey that began more than 10 years ago came to an end today. An adventure only half done has finished. Only there is no hero in this story, just a man. A man who went off to distant lands and fought for freedom, for all that's good. He survived the War but not the battle. He did not die a Soldier's death, he doesn't even look wounded. But nonetheless, his War is over. He looks out today at a future so very different from the one he expected to find at this, the next phase of his life. One much more bleak, more grey, less exciting. Lonely. Depressed, he looks at the symbol of his station for the past decade, knowing that today is the last day he shall ever where it.
Part of him did die on that battlefield so long ago. Part of him never came home.
