New York, New York!!!!!
Today I went to New York City for the first time ever. My art history class took a trip to the Metropolitan Museum. I got up at the crack of dawn, while it was still dark out, and climbed on the bus in front of Bay Path College at 6:45 am. Most of us slept on the ride there. There were doughnuts and juice boxes for breakfast. When we arrived, we spent a couple of hours in the museum, mostly looking at Greek and Roman art, since that's what we're currently studying. I took a peek at the modern art, and modern photography. I have a budding interest in photography, so I was in awe.
After we left the museum, we went in search of an affordable restaurant. I think the Metropolitan Museum was at Madison and 74th maybe? We walked from Madison and 74th, to Madison and 48th. Long fucking walk to find a restaurant we could afford. It was ridiculous! Meals were like twenty bucks! I couldn't believe how expensive everything was...I'm sure I should have expected it though. When I was told things would be ridiculously expensive in New York, I wasn't prepared to find out how expensive. We passed countless shops on Madison, all squeezed together, very tightly. Tiny, glitzy, glamorous shops, with overpriced fashion items. Everyone in New York city is fast and into high fashion. All I could do as I walked passed these shops was stare in awe. I've never seen anything so glamorous. The city itself, is not glamorous. Everything and everyone in it is.
After getting something to eat, we went to FAO Schwartz. The coolest toy store ever!!! I've never seen a toy store so huge and so awesome before. They had candy bigger than your head. A large piano you could play by stepping on it. And some guy tried to sell me a five dollar bean bag, that I could have just made at home, and make it better. After the toy store, my friend decided to show me what New York City was really like in terms of fashion and prices, and took me to Saxx Fifth Avenue. The most expensive store I've ever seen. I was immediately intimidated by this store. First of all, when you walk in, your hit with an unbearable smell of perfume. I had to hold my breath or else I think I would have died. We could still smell it four floors up. And everything is wayyyy overpriced. $1000 shoes, $2000 bags, $800 dresses. It was ridiculous. Hmmm, I keep saying that. I think the whole city is a bit ridiculous. We didn't spend much time there. Besides, because of the way we were dressed, no one offered to help us. One look at us, and the whole city could tell we were, A. not New Yorkers, and B. didn't have any money. We also went to St. Patrick's Cathedral. It was interesting going from a busy street to a silent cathedral. There were different stations of candles, and information about saints.
After that, we stopped at my favorite place, The American Girl store. Four floors of dolls, outfits and accessories. It was fucking awesome. I am currently reliving my childhood. I can't wait to go back, and bring my doll, and get her hair done, and pick out a new outfit. God, it's like I'm nine again. My mother thinks I'm being silly...but secretly, she loves it. I got a catalogue, and I'm picking out a bunch of stuff for Christmas.
It was a long and tiring day. I would never live in New York City. But I'd like to visit every once in a while.
P.S...people will run you down in this city, and not even blink. There were several times I was crossing the street, and I almost got hit. If someone hits you in Northampton, MA, they get crucified. In New York...they'll just tell you to get out of the way.
