@missy @rambo thank you for a topic that truly inspired me, in a day as important as today!
-------
Well, this is a subject that most people universally agree on the meaning but fail to apply in their everyday lives, so I think it's a very interesting topic to write about!
I mean, if we're going to the dictionary it will say "a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities, or achievements." or "due regard for the feelings, wishes, or rights of others." But I fell there's so much more than that in it.
I mean, when we respect someone it's not just that we admire them, it's because we recognize them as equals. And I feel that most people fail to respect others exactly because of that. When we feel superior because we're smarter, we are better looking or we have more followers on Instagram than others, that's when we start being disrespectful...we feel others are below us and hence, don't deserve to be treated as equals. When we believe that our sex is superior to others, our ethnicity or anything that define us is better than everyone else, that's when we fail as humans. But we're all the same, we were all born from a woman, we breath the same air and we need the food and love to survive in this hectic world.
And today is a day that this word keeps coming to my mind, because today in Argentina, our government is voting for the first time EVER, the law that might decriminalize the abortion. In our country it's still illegal, there are many women dying every year on clandestine abortion clinics because out government doesn't provide them with a safe and free abortion system. Rich girls pay tons of money and find good doctors and clean ORs, they live to tell the story or to keep their secret. But poor girls don't have that luck, they die painful deaths or survive with horrible sequelae. And why am I saying this, you might ask? Because TONS of people are against this law, they think the life of the unborn baby is more important than the life of the mother. They don't RESPECT those women and their right to choose. They think they are murderers, that they want an easy-way-out of a life of unprotected sex...they think they are below them because they think differently, and that is outrageous.
No-one can decide what others can choose, because no-one is above others. If we understand what equality means, equality with other sexual and gender orientations, other ethnicities, other religious beliefs and other lifestyles, we'll find out we're all the same, we're all fighting for the same thing: RESPECT, our right to be recognized as equals.
