Hello again SG land,
I've been a bit MIA as of late putting my energy into managing my physical and mental health, getting things in order so I can get the most out of the next shootfest. I am really hoping to improve my modelling and knock out some sets I feel proud of. I'll write up a proper life update soon, but for now here's a quick blog about the last movie I watched. Hope you enjoy x
A Scanner Darkly boasts a cast list that made me scratch my head and wonder "how have I never heard of this before!?", not a rare occurrence as I am no cinephile but I was intrigued nonetheless. Based on Philip K. Dick's 1977 novel of the same name and released in 2006 the movie stars Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Robert Downey Jr., and Woody Harrelson. A fitting line up for a narrative immersed in drug induced hallucinations and paranoia, festering within an Orwellian dystopia. The animation style of simplified colours and shapes creates a recognizable but distorted reality, that parallels the disconnect experienced by drug addicts and amplifies the actors erratic performances. Ironically this visual separation from reality is one of the most authentic depictions of chemical addiction I have ever seen in a film.
I do not recommend A Scanner Darkly as a flick to chill out to, it's a movie that holds almost all of it's cards to it's chest until the very end, leaving the viewer to hang on because this shit has got to make some sense soon. Trust me it does, and trust me it's a bit of a kick in the heart.
