There is no band I love more than Joy Division. I've been listening to them since 1988. No other band has even come close to them. No one. And I've seen over 1000 bands play live. That is not an exaggeration. In reality it may actually be closer to 1500. The only one I ever wanted to see I never could. They never made it to the US and even if they had I would have been 9 years old when they came. It just wasn't in the cards for me.
Last night changed everything. Peter Hook is touring with his new band The Light and they are playing Joy Division's tracks. It's been thirty years since Ian Curtis hanged himself and Peter Hook, Joy Division's original bass player decided to tour in honor of Ian.
Some might say he's trying to cash in on him. I won't argue that point except to say that the ticket prices for the shows are some of the lowest I've seen charged in years, he's playing only small venues, and the t-shirts were very reasonably priced. Either way, I just don't care. For me to see an original member of the band play the tracks I have loved so dearly for over 20 years now is all that mattered.
New Order toured 5 years ago doing Joy Division tracks. I didn't catch any of the shows in person, but having seen the videos on youtube, as much as I love Bernard Sumner's voice with New Order, he sounded horrible singing Ian's lyrics. Peter Hook on the other hand was absolutely brilliant.
The band consisted of drummer Paul Kehoe (Revenge, Monaco, Freebass), keyboardist Andy Poole (Monaco), guitarist Nat Wason (Freebass), and Hook's son Jack on bass. A very talented bunch to say the least. They played every track from the "Ideal for Living" ep as well as the entire "Unknown Pleasures" lp. They did three encore songs, "Atmosphere", "Transmission", and "Love Will Tear Us Apart".
I could not have been more pleased. It was a perfect show.
This was from last night's show.

That's craziness! I would have been there, except at last minute I changed my flight plans as the BA ones were too expensive. That was where I had intended to go, though. Someday... Maybe next year. Have lots of fun and I'll be sure to ask you about it. Gah, yes, have fun!
