I used to "borrow" a lot of music from the internet. I justified it for a number of reasons. As a DJ I was promoting the artists I played and staying current and up to date on all the newest and best music costs a lot of money. But the reality is, like many other people do, I stole music. Plain and simple.
It's never made me feel guilty. It's not like you could get a proper sense of the crime. You can't see the victim or comprehend the loss. That was until I started getting bootlegged myself.
I started getting very serious with my musical project in the summer of 2006. By October of 2007 I had my first 10 track CD released and since then I've put out 10 other releases. As soon as I started having even the slightest bit of success I noticed the free illegal downloads popping up. Now I can't do a google search without half the hits coming back as bootlegs.
Now this may sound like I'm complaining, but honestly I don't really know how I feel about it. It's nice to know that people out there appreciate my music and are in some small way actually helping promote my project, but damn, the money I could be making if people were purchasing my tunes for real. That would certainly be nice.
One small benefit is people tend to make videos and post them on YouTube for some reason. And so I have found three of my tracks on there already.
Of course, this guy happens to be advertising his free download site with my tracks, but what can you do?
This is one of my favorite songs and features a sample (it's in Spanish) from Kya. And samples of dolphins.
EDIT: July 23
I found another.
And made one of my own
