On October 22, 2004, 24 year-old Natalie, was severely injured while working as a Physical Therapists Assistant. A 500-pound weight machine fell on top of Natalie, causing a serious injury to her spinal cord. No one is quite sure how this happened, but as a result, two vertebrae in her neck were shattered. She was immediately rushed to the ECMC trauma unit where she underwent a 6 1/2 hour surgery. Doctors removed the damaged vertebrae and inserted a steel plate and two rods. Natalie needed the aid of a ventilator to breathe and was unable to speak for several weeks. This freak accident left Natalie with no movement from her mid-torso to her toes. Although she can move her arms, she has no movement in her wrists or her fingers.
Natalie stayed at ECMC until December 27, 2004. She was then transported in a medical jet to the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia, where she currently is. The Shepherd Center is a rehabilitation center that specializes in spinal cord injuries. There she is receiving physical therapy, occupational therapy and recreational therapy. Although she is getting stronger, the doctors are not sure what her outcome will be.
