Work was OK tonight. Better than last night, anyway. I brought some kimchi to work with me today. Most of the people tried it and liked it. I was going to brew up some soy sauce for some sushi, but it got to busy.
One of the more interesting aspects of working in a kitchen is the opportunity to watch co-workers really freak out. This evening was one of those times. I guess the dining room got a bit full while a party was going on upstairs and in the banquet room next to the kitchen. So naturally the hotel's general manager decides to come in and help out. Well, Bob the GM, doesn't bother all of us, the line cooks. However, the waitstaff, well, let's just say he gives them the heebie-jeebies. I wouldn't normally take so much pleasure at seeing waitstaff, but man, when everything is running smoothly on the line and one of the people being rankled with is a witchy old lady that thinks she is better than everyone else, you just have to smile.
I think I might crack into some of the kimchi in my fridge. good thing none of you out there can smell it when I'm done. Some of the best things in the world smell really funky. I love Stilton cheese, it smells like the barnyard where it was made. Durian, lovely tasting fruit. It makes great smoothies to go along with a spicy meal. The popular nickname for durian is "corpse fruit" being that that is how it smells. Pretty attractive stuff, huh? Not to many people do like it though, it has an odd taste to it. Hard to describe, really, but kind of like a pineapple with hints of garlic, onion, and christmas tree. Needless to say it is hard to find on most menus.
Well plenty said for one night. Tomorrow I go get a beer or two after work, I think there might be a good Belgian on tap!
