An initial question was asked by anthropologists studying cultures in the New Guiney highlands, and with this raw primitive culture to study, the question was asked what are men good for. Analysis concluded that men went hunting, and the women went foraging, with the women bringing back more calories than the men on average, the men only succeeding every once and a while. This evidence was supported in other studies of other cultures. To their credit the men brought back meat and fat, which was enjoyable, although not necessary when compared to available veggies filled with protein. Most notably though, their kill was not shared exclusively with their family, but they shared with everyone.
The mens hunting party seemed to be out of the loop of evolutionary behavior. They brought back less calories and they didnt share specifically with their families. So what were they good for? All evidence so far points to results similar to their four legged male victims: competing with each other and injecting sperm. However one perspective gives them credit; and oddly enough only one: and thats that the mens hunting gives them the ability to hunt and kill other tribes as well as defend their own, being an obvious evolutionary benefit directly to their families as well as the tribe. Unfortunately this is disgusting in that their only solving their own conflict.
Theres also an interesting role played by elder women in these primitive cultures. It starts simply enough with menopause and its discovered evolutionary benefits; that after enduring menopause they care for their grandchildren instead of attempting to have more children; and the caretaking leads to better birth weight and care etc. Studies confirm this as an advantage, discrediting the alternative that menopause is just a natural train wreck of body function.
Oddly enough though, the grandmother benefit is weighted more on their daughters children, as opposed to any sons. This showed, even in a survey of 700 families in Germany, concluding that 50% preferred their maternal grandmother, while only 12-14% the paternal grandmother. The explanation is biological, and evolutionary. The sons children are much less likely to be blood related to the grandmother, with infidelity being what it is, and on the other hand womens children are obviously theirs. So any post menopausal women forgetting to visit or send Christmas cards for their sons family, theres a biological explanation for their tendencies.
