Hello lovelies! I hope everyone's having a great week. I dug deep to 10/31/14 for a blog topic that I'm really connected with. Who's my favorite author? To get that answer you don't have to look further than the inscriptions on my inner thighs. Maya Angelou✨
I was first introduced to her work when I was 9. I recited her emotional poem Just Like Jobe for a pageant and won the "speech" category--and the pageant. I was hooked. Before I knew what feminism was I was oozing pride and strength for women. I felt empowered by her writing.
By adolescence I was full blown obsessed. I had read I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and And Still I Rise--books published 20yrs before my birth--twice through and memorized upwards of 50 poems. I entered high school armed w Phenomenal Woman quotes for any boy who dare test my patience🙅🏾When she passed in 2014 it was heart wrenching. I didn't know how this world would turn without her voice. I felt it my duty to carry her words with me even more so than I already did. A way to make her a part of my daily communication so that I can continue to spread her work. I had 2 of my favorite quotes by her tattooed on me😊
The left leg from top to bottom reads, "My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive. And to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor and some style." The right leg reads from bottom to top saying, "Love recognizes no boundaries. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, and penetrates walls to arrive at it's destination full of hope." RIP Maya✨I'll never forget you or your work.
