Was going to start this by saying that so far no rain.. yippee.. but is has started this morning. Good news is there is an Internet cafe so am able to write this.. great.
Well I have been coming to this thing since 1977, I was 5, with my mum and dad.. Every year especially recently I spend hours agonising over coming here rather then Reading.. this year more so as Pixies (swoon) were playing last night.. however.. yesterday was great
Ella Guru were good in early hours, Emilianna Torrini was much better than on record.. and my boy Iain Archer... wow was he good.. headlining.. and he played it loud, hard and dirty.. vast improvement on record (which is good). He was backed by the Amazing Pilots who I'm going to see today.. in fact they are the only act I want to see today so will be spending much time browsing the second hand record stalls... hey how bad is it when the guy who runs the Monster Music record stall says "hi" and he recognises me...!
Now for the highlight of yesterday (oh and Pedro the Lion not on the bill so sadness there).. got my programme when I got here and saw that a band called This Picture were playing the cafe tent venue.. I thought this can't be them .. so turned up apprehensively to a crowded tent and got near the front.. at side of stage saw Simon (lead singer) getting ready for set.. oh yes it was them! Now This Picture were no great shakes.. but there first album and one track in particular was awesome back in the early 90s.. Naked Rain.. and yes they played it and blew the roof off the tent.. I love that unhinged fullpelt giving 110% stuff and that track has it.. they explained that they haven't played live for 10 years.. and they needn't again for me.. that few minutes was just great.
Got me thinking about lump to the throat live experiences that I have had.. you know the ones .. and this weirdly was one of them.. This Picture goddamn.. don't tell anyone!
I think my top 5 lumps in throat at live events have been..
1. Pavement .. August 1992.. first UK tour at Leeds Duchess of York.. turned up with a broken heart.. (just been dumped) and went alone to Leeds to see Pavement.. Steve Malkmus opened the show in a packed Leeds pub with... Summer Babe and screamed the opening line.. "Ice baby .. I f***ed your girlfriend.. " awesome night.
2. My Bloody Valentine.. Bristol Anson Rooms Feb 1992... you made me realize... so loud and beautiful..
3. The Pixies.. last summer at Brixton Academy.. with my pal Gary... when they opened with "HEad on"..
4. Sebadoh at the Fleece in Bristol.. 1992..
5. This Picture .. yesterday on playing Naked Rain.. what a great love song that is.. (must put it on mix tape)
Am now going to get a coffee and then check out those record stalls .. will report on any purchases..
bye for now.. will be back on tomorrow morning ..
xx
