Mutual of Omaha's Wild Fucking Kingdom
Went for my ride this morning, and since its a holiday I stretched it out. I also left later than typical, so it was light enough to see clearly. You wouldn't believe the vast array of fauna that I saw. The typical birds, of course. Saw a pile of rabbits, two cats a monster of a hawk who took off from his perch and flew along with me for a short while. Cool!! As I rolled along through a patch of trees, something moved off to my right. A deer, two, no... three deer. I heard a loud snort to my left that darn near scared the pants off me. 3 more deer, one of them a big buck. Neat stuff.
I came out of the trees and back onto the road. Up the hill and around the road block they set up to keep the dirt-bike and ATV riding kids out. My chain started rattling, I looked down and saw a small twig stuck in the frame. Figured it would work its way out eventually. Looked back up at the road and saw....
... A BEAR!!! I'm sure it was smaller than I thought at the time, but I swear the thing was the size of a VW bug. It was still a little way off, and it never noticed me as it lumbered across the road and into the trees on the other side. However, rather than disturb its morning, I quickly turned around and got the hell out of there.
I think I need a new pair of shorts.
I mean, intellectually, I know there are bears. Encountering one early in the morning, alone, unarmed and pre-caffeine is a bit startling. ;-)
