I sat out on the porch today and watched the rain come down as I smoked my cigarette. The way the water came down reminded me of Southern California winters, during two of which I was homeless. The feeling of my bare skin on the soaking wet carpet that covers our porch was exactly the same as my soaking wet socks squishing in my shoes as I walked from place to place trying to find warmth and cover from the rain.
Do me a favor. Go through your closets and garages, and if you come across jackets you don't wear, blankets you don't use, an extra umbrella or rain gear, go and put them in the trunk of your car. The next time you see a homeless person, offer them what you have no use for, because they certainly do.
This won't make a difference in the big picture, but it will make a big difference to that one person. I know, because at one time that one person was me.
