Ill start this out by saying that I have had a cold threatening to infect me fully since the beginning of the year. I can feel its constant nagging in the back of my throat and feel its incessant stare whenever I walk around my house barefoot. That aside, Id like to state that most illnesses that human beings fall prey to are nothing more than psychosomatic.
I dont mean to say that all illness is a product of the mind. There is infallible proof of the existence of certain germs, viruses, and diseases that do cause us to wither and die in ways that are not natural. What I merely meant was that most smaller or lesser illnesses are products of our own minds.
I offer my cousin as an example. He once fell prey to the disturbing grip of the Church of Scientology. I wondered why someone with such a high level of intellect would ever adhere to any form of organized religion let alone on comprised of such mundane and blatantly transparent ideals. This was a boy that used to debate existentialism with me and argue the point that Freud was not as much of a hack as Jung tried to paint him out to be at the tender age of sixteen (I was thirteen).
I asked him why he would ever agree to learn the lessons and participate in so large a ruse as this organization. He stated in a calm manner that I to this day have never seen again, that he was merely there to further expand his mind. He stated that the teachings of the books and the lessons of the instructors was nothing more that psychosomatics.
I asked him to explain and he boiled it down to this: he has not been sick since he started going there. At that particular point it had been six months. He stated that he had not become sick merely because he has not allowed himself to. I was astonished to say the least, and amazed that something so basic and fundamental had escaped my grasp.
He subsequently left the organization after he witnessed first hand how greedy they were and the fact that they were placing financial gain above spiritual and mental growth, but the lessons are still there. He has not had a cold in five years.
So, as I sit here and feel the old familiar sting of a raspy throat and the threat of this cold riding my heels, I can understand quiet clearly that this is all in my mind. I cannot however, be rid of it so easily. Apparently, the mastery of mind over physical being requires a mind unclouded by mental instabilities
and those are things I have in abundance.

Of course it's also easy for a west coaster like you to say "it's all in your mind" when you've never experienced temperatures below 60 degress and you've never been to the east coast where we are now currently getting buried under three, count 'em, THREE feet of snow.
