Hi everyone ! I'm having my first show at the VAV Gallery (1395 Rene-Levesque W. corner of Cresent) on June the 27th at 7:00pm we're having a little vernissage and it'd be really fun to see you there.
Julia and I are both 1st year photography students addressing issues of queer representation through portraiture and in my case through self-portraiture.
My series In the Navy is a small narrative about the adventurous, romantic and dangerous life of a (gay) sailor. Through this project, I have had the opportunity to explore my interest in cliches of masculinity and homoeroticism. Using a dream-like, 1920s silent film style, I am appropriating classic gay sailor imagery in order to confront issues of historical queer stereotypes.
By locating my subject-position as a lesbian/queer woman, I am interested in exploring other facets of queer/gay male culture and stereotypes in this body of work. I am especially interested in the in the relationship between homosocial institutions (the Navy in this case) and homosexual representation of desire through iconic imagery. By dressing as a male (and as a genderfucked drag queen), I am also addressing my own interest in female masculinity and gender bending/ genderqueer culture.
See you there
