Beware huge hockey rant.
I am not a big hockey fan persay, not as big as many others are but I still have an opinion, I am just a guy who plays too much NHL hockey video games and thinks he knows something about hockey when I don't really know much.
I am a loyal Edmonton Oilers fan what can I say.
I have live din Vancouver for three years and I still root for the Oilers, why? Aside from being the closest NHL team to where I used to live I find they are a very respectable team.
I can't say I am a Canuck fan, I would be happy if they won a stanley cup but I would be happy if any Canadian team won a Stanley Cup.
Thinking about which Canadian teams I always have something bad to say about them in a way, don't mind me i am just rambling on. these are my opinions on the Canadian teams
Canucks - Luongo, without him that team would be nothing. Everybody knows it, their offense sucks and is lazy, their defense tries their best but in the end Luongo is their savior. With one major strength you know all the teams heavy hitters either with the puck or in body checks are going out to cripple Luongo.
Maple Leafs/Canadiens - Too many old or too many european players who yeah you can buy cheap but they become expensive very fast and which means greater chance for them to leave to a much warmer climate or a fatter contract with the usually teams. Again they always seem to instead of invest in young talent they much rather just go for seasoned professionals which in my opinion work very rarely. It's good to have some seasoned guys in the leadership role but not a whole team of them, all you get is a long juggling act of injuries from aging stars (with age comes more injuries).
Senators - These guys should have won last year if they didn't drop the ball in my opinion they have a perfect team, they are still the best Canadian team on the east coast. I wouldn't be surprised to seem them storm through like the did last year. I am sure they know how to get to the finals.
Flames - In my opinion they are the canadian west coast's only hope of winning a cup they could have and should have done it against Tampa bay but they didn't. but that seems to be the case with so many Canadian teams these days, get to the finals but drop the ball to a US team. I think the fact that the Flames are still nearly the same team they were then but now more seasoned and ready to go, if they don't win now, they never will or at least not till another generation of Calgary Flames players come around.
Oilers - Say what you will about the team but I find that the oilers is a team that builds damn good players and does what other teams in my opinion should do more of, maybe they do it way too much but when your franchise doesn't make as much money as the other teams even in Canada you are dealt with a certain hand. in 2006 they had a team that in my opinion if they kept that team for one more year they would have won the Stanley Cup. But again they have always been a team that built strong players one can only talk about Messier, Gretzky, Fuhr, Coffey, Peca, Smyth, Pronger. It seems like 2007 lightning struck again just like it did in 1988(Gretzky)/1992 (the rest of the championship team).
But not the Oilers got a team full of hungry youngsters, and while they have a very slim chance of getting to the playoffs I think they will be a stronger team next year, and even stronger next year, the Oilers will make it to the playoffs in the next 5 years. Just hope they win the cup before all the young guys get to expensive. The fact that they got Cogliano, Horcoff, Reasoner, Torres and Roloson. I think they will dominate soon. I wish that Messier would want to coach for the Oilers, I think with Messier's experience he can get the youngers playing like champions in no time).
But if they did make it by the skin of their teeth into these playoffs I think they will be the Cinderella team of the playoffs and that they would play as great of a game as any of the best teams in there.
I play my bet the same way I did last year, last year I said the Senators were my pick with hopes of the Flames meeting them. Was right about the Senators, this year my pick is the Calgary Flames.
But when NHL 2009 comes out for PS2 or whatever new system if can even afford it because i know NHL wont come out on my mac (EA please make it for the mac), I will still use the Oilers.
