I was over on Twitter just now (you can follow me, if you'd like) and I noticed that #sundance is trending, and I couldn't help but think. "Fuck Sundance!"
I live in Utah, and I have to deal with the bullshit that is the Sundance Film Festival every year, and, honestly, I'm tired of it. It's really just another place for the rich and famous to come, sit around, and jerk each other off. Most of the films are terrible, there is nothing independent about it (I don't care if you don't have a studio backer, if it cost more than $500,000 to make, it's not an independent film), and it's more of a burden on this state than anything else.
I'm actually kind of alright with that last one, though; I wouldn't mind Utah shriveling up and dying a slow death. This shiithole deserves it.
I could go on and on about how elitist and bourgeois the Sundance Film Festival is, but it's a tired story and it has been done to death. I will, instead, tell people to support three other film festivals: Slamdance (it's Sundance without as many celebrities, and isn't independent), Tromadance (the only film festival I know of where there is no entry fee and all films are free to see), and Gangrene (a comedy film festival geared specifically towards independent, short films).
That's it. To hell with the rest, specifically Sundance. Maybe by the end on this ten day nightmare, I can have a better articulated post expressing my disdain.
